University Entrance

University Entrance

The entrance of St. John's completely redesigned.  The creation of an appropriate gateway into the university.  In harmony with the rest of the campus, the granite piers and walls form a new entry plaza and social gathering point off the main thoroughfares.

The Great Lawn

The Great Lawn

The “Great Lawn” and campus core embody the University’s mission of service, scholarship and enlightenment. Establishing boundaries and recommendations for improvement within this zone strictly adhere to tradition, while providing for appropriate educational and community building opportunities.

Green Space Transformation

Green Space Transformation

The removal of roadways and parking, and the creation of a vehicular free pedestrian zone, revived this thoroughfare and backside to the Main Campus. The new University Center, forecourt and “Grove” celebrate the diverse cultures represented at St. John’s University.

The Grove

The Grove

Our design for a new pedestrian boulevard connects the main campus and Great Lawn with the newly constructed University Center/Student Union. Eliminating a major roadway enabled a new path for social interaction.

Stairway Connection

Stairway Connection

“Prepare the Path…” The Body, the Mind and the Spirit. The inspiration for the stairway and adjacent plazas alludes to the spiritual connection, but serves to create a physical link between the resident student’s daily routine and Main Campus.

Carnesecca Plaza

Carnesecca Plaza

The elimination of a major campus artery and associated parking areas allowed for the creation of a dynamic new sports plaza, park, fields and adjacent green spaces.

The Residential Village

The Residential Village

Opportunities for congregating, play and performance are provided within this zone. An organic gardening and composting center, assisted by student volunteers, promotes campus sustainability.

Outdoor Gathering Spaces

Outdoor Gathering Spaces

The transformation of an abandoned rear terrace into a welcoming student gathering area. Conveniently located midway between the residential village and main campus green, this new series of outdoor spaces is used for student meetings, dining and relaxing.

Sacred Garden

Sacred Garden

St. Thomas More Church and its environs provide a natural setting for the creation of a series of sacred spaces. The “Rosary Walk” features sitting areas for meditation on the mysteries. Select trees were chosen which bloom during May and October, the months of the Rosary.

An elaborate pergola with stone columns matches the sitting walls. Adirondack chairs and tables were carefully placed around the plaza for student relaxation.

Gravel paths, cobble and decorative stone paving, plantings, wood benches, and a custom designed fountain create a peaceful environment for reflection.  From this carefully designed sitting area is a view of the NYC skyline.
